Yo homies, it appears I’ve been given the honour of doing the first entry on this new blog! so I thought I’d give a little recap of what took place (at least through my eyes).
Basically, I’ve been wanting to do some music workshops with kids for a while now, so when this opportunity presented itself, I couldn’t be more excited!… However, the fairytale picture in my mind quickly dissolved, when I walked into the Mushroom records boardroom and saw 15 faces staring at me from across the room, I was terrified!!.. I tried my best to look cool, but I think everybody could feel the nerves haha. Luckily the cutest 12 year old kid in the world (nathan) was there to help break the ice with his fearless attitude.
After I got a chance to meet everybody and get a pen in their hand, the nerves were a distant memory. Matik played the beat through his MPC and this amazing energy started to form in the room as all of these kids started to jot down these emotional, insightful lyrics. Raymes and I walked around from person to person to help bounce around some ideas, but it was clear that there was some real talent in the room even without my help. By the end of the session we had a good start on the direction of the song, and explained that we only had 1 more workshop before it was time to record! (which was a pretty daunting thought haha)
The 2nd workshop was a really relaxed vibe. Everybody was comfortable with each other by this stage, so it made for a great atmosphere. The dancers had a choreographer come in for the day to work on some stuff which was cool, Harry O from Collingwood dropped by for a while too which was awesome and we had a new inclusion in Cyrus (who with his extreme confidence and capability let me know he’d be ok to catch up). Binasa, Dana and Tyla had already finished lyrics so they were able to start practising their verses, which did wonders for inspiring everyone else to do the same. Raymes, Matik and I walked around from person to person again to give some help where necessary, but I knew we were looking good. Plus with a piano, drum kit and some guitars lying around, we found out pretty quick that some kids had talent for more than just lyrics! (which made it’s way onto the track too).
The day of recording was actually really smooth sailing when considering we had 20 people at a studio and a group of kids who were recording for the first time. It was just an awesome day! One by one they came in and delivered their lyrics with conviction (not as easy as it sounds haha), the weather was beautiful, the herald sun came down for some interviews and photos, we ate pizzas… it was just a beautiful thing! Then after 6 hours we finally had all of the recording done, the dancers had done their thing, and the buses arrived, so it was time to say goodbye! It was kind of sad, it reminded me of school camp haha…
Anyway, I waved goodbye as the buses pulled away… Then had to walk back inside and do 6 hours of mixing! What a life… haha
Peace Out
