The ‘Ugly’ choice…
Hey guys;
So we’ve got another competition for you guys!
Have any of you heard about the glassing case that went before the courts last week? Well in a nutshell, a few years ago in a nightclub a guy glassed a stranger in the face because he wrongly thought the stranger had spat at his girlfriend. The consequences of this single action have been devastating for all involved. The victim has suffered permanent scarring to his face and the attacker was sentenced to three years in jail for what the judge called a ‘extraordinary display of violence’. You can read more about the case here.
The attacker made a very ugly choice that night, and no doubt one he will regret for a very long time. So what we want to know is: what choice would you have made that night?

Three weeks of hanging out with Pez and Mantra and meeting dozens of young folks from a wonderful mix of Victoria’s secondary schools. It doesn’t get much better than that. AND I got to be part of this amazing songwriting component of the ‘Live No Fear’ campaign that’s produced some simply incredible material. It reminded me – if I needed it, why I chose music as a career. In what other business could I be confronted on a daily basis with enthusiasm, skill, honesty and fearlessness of the next generation of our industry’s practitioners?
Though this round of workshops is finished, I know the boys and I are hanging out to see all the finished lyrics AND to hear them combined with the beats. I wish I was there to see the looks on the faces of the writers when they hear their words come to life. You should all be proud of yourselves – I know we are!
If I’ve got to sum it up in a few words, I’d just like to say thanks to the schools and students for being part of ‘Words Not Weapons’ and sharing their stories and passions with us.

The Real Truth with Pez
This project was developed by a bunch of young people across the City of Melbourne. ‘Live No Fear’ tries to send the message that living without fear could be possible if a few changes can happen, and that this lifestyle is the best way to reduce the chance of being involved in a violent or threatening situation. From the very first moment I heard about what this project was all about, the thinking around trying to spread the idea that carrying knives and weapons is dangerous for others and yourself, I knew I wanted to be involved in any way I could be. All kids involved in this project felt the same way about this issue in society, and each and every one of us have been either affected by such a situation personally or know of someone else being affected close to them. The more people carry weapons, the more unsafe everyone becomes which then forces others to carry. “The real truth” is a group of us kids, writing our own lyrics, voicing our real opinions about this issue, trying to send the message that we can as a society break this bad habit of “thinking it’s cool to carry knives” or the belief “we need to carry weapons for protection”. Everyone can say they want change to happen, but it’s much harder to act and take the correct action, and by producing this music clip, I believe it is a first and big step to changing the terrible pattern of knife crime in all age groups, especially youth’s. It was an amazing experience to work with some of the best in the music industry and I met some incredible people that I now call friends. I’d like to thank all the people involved in this project “Live no Fear”.
Lauren Ure, Pez, Dj Maddox, The Salvation Army, Victorian Government’s (Department of Justice) Knives Scar Lives, The whole of Mushroom group, the group of talented kids in this project and just everyone for being interested in this issue and supporting us to try and make a change. By talking to others, spreading the word about our campaign, about what’s really happening in society, you’re helping.
And remember, if you are one of the people stuck in a gang that think it’s the way to hurt others for no reason, it’s not the way, and hopefully it’s not too late for you to realize you can leave, before it’s too late for your life or for someone else’s life you might cause harm to.
Were not the law and we shouldn’t try take the law into our own hands. That’s why we have the police for our protection.

Mantra calls out to Hallam & Deer Park
Wanna send a big shout out to the peeps from Hallam Senior College and Vic Uni Secondary College (Deer Park) who participated in the Words Not Weapons program this week. I was absolutely blown away by the amount of amazing talent on display. I can’t wait to check out all the lyrics, so finish them off and send them through.

Words Not Weapons – a shout out from Pez
So I’m back again for another Live No Fear Project!
This time we’re going into secondary schools around Melbourne, writing lyrics with kids about conflict and violence and the consequences that stem from that.
I’ll be heading to Haileybury, Princes Hill, Parkdale and Geelong High. Mantra (www.myspace.com/mantrahiphop) will be heading to Hallam and Deer Park. Esteemed music educator and all round legend, Dobe Newton, will be joining us.
The best lyrics from each school will be recorded and produced by Styalz Fuego (check out his work at www.soundcloud.com/styalzfuego) and some of his mates. The finished MP3s will be up on this website in a few months.
Another 2 schools from regional Vic that submit their lyrics to us will also get their songs recorded.

Live No Fear take 2!
Hey guys;
My name is Jen and I am really excited to be working on Live No Fear. Live No Fear started mid-way through 2010 but has been on hiatus for a little while. Well, we’re hoping to bring it back to life in a big way!
We have some really awesome projects on the go at the moment which we will be talking about more and more on the blog. So here are the three Live No Fear things I’m really stoked about at the moment:
1) Choices – Choices is a new program we’re running out through some key selected schools in Victoria. Choices is all about… well, Choices. Students who are lucky enough to participate will get to spend a few hours with professional boxers Sam ‘The King’ Soliman, Daniel Iannano and Sam Colimban who will talk about how they keep their fists to the ring and fight the rest of their battles with their minds.
2) Live No Fear Songwriting – the wonderful crew at Mushroom Music have been kind enough to partner with us again to help turn YOUR lyrics into real music. Recorded and pressed on your own CD! But more about that later on…
3) And last but not least, our new online community director Tanya – we’ve been lucky enough to get the awesome Tanya to come on board as the voice of the Live No Fear blog. Tanya will introduce herself here very soon, but she will be be on this blog all day everyday answering questions, talking to all you guys about our projects, music and just life in general. So be sure to drop her a line sometime.
That’s it from me now but I can’t wait to get some more info up here ASAP about what’s happening, so stay tuned.

Choices at Wingate Avenue
Hey guys;
First off, thanks to all of you who came along to the ‘Choices’ session last night in Ascot Vale at the Wingate Ave Community Centre. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
Our mighty boxers, Sam Soliman & Sam Columban, really enjoyed getting to spend sometime with you and talk about why its so important for you to make good ‘choices’ in life. After all, these guys really know the difference between a good choice and bad choice could change your life.

New project – Words Not Weapons
We’re totally stoked to be launching our new Live No Fear program – Words Not Weapons.
Created in partnership with Mushroom Marketing, Words Not Weapons reminds all those students lucky enough to take part that the pen is always mightier than the sword. Giving students the opportunity to work with hip hop superstars Pez () and Mantra ) to write their own lyrics about living with and without fear.
And as if a songwriting workshop with Australia’s premier hip hop artists wasn’t enough, all lyrics will be given to renowned producer DJ Stylez to mix into a fully produced track and then pressed onto a CD. The final product will be distributed to media and radio stations, as well as distributed to all participating schools.
Pretty cool, hey? So here is a big shout out to all those schools who are participating. But hey, even if your schools isn’t participating in the program you can still submit any lyrics you want here onto Live No Fear and maybe you’ll be lucky enough for Pez or Mantra to read them and give you some feedback.
Look forward to talking more about Words Not Weapons here in the next few weeks (including some cool competitions we’ve got coming up – so stay tuned!).
